Don Mattingly's Brief Comeback

Pettitte pitched a simulated game at Legend's Field today. Jorge Posada was his catcher. Alex Rodriguez was the third baseman, and Jeter was at shortstop. The first baseman, yup, Donny Baseball himself.

Mattingly played first for the 4-inning simulated game. In some ways it must not have been too weird for Mattingly. During his last season he played with (at least briefly) Pettitte, Posada, and Jeter, and in his final game, against ARod. Of course that was nearly 12 years ago now.

The Yankees' new bench coach was late coming in on a ball allowing for an infield single. However he redeemed himself by flawlessly scooping a low Derek Jeter throw. When asked about a comeback, he said by the end of the game his back was hurting.
