Bernie's Not Done

I know a lot of people think Bernie Williams is done. I think he's just slumping. His average dipped down to .216 before he hit a home run 3 minutes ago. It was the home run, it was how the home run was hit that make me sure he still has something left. This wasn't a Yankee-Stadium home run that just barely gets over the 314-foot sign down the rightfield line. This was a shot to Death Valley and he knew it right off the bat that it was gone. I think he's healthier than he's been in years with the easier workload, but just hasn't found his stride yet. Don't write Bernie off yet.

Jeter has raised his average to .418 so far tonight and still can't gain any ground on Miguel Tejada who is now up to .432. Reggie Jackson said during the Yankees' opening West Coast trip, that if Derek Jeter starts out strong he'll win the batting title. The "if" part happened. Now we'll get to see if Reggie is correct. April and May are the only 2 months throught Jeter's career that his lifetime batting average is under .300.

Bernie is D-U-N done. It amazes me that most AL teams seem content to get mediocre offense out of what should be the best offensive position on the team (although I do understand rotating guys through the position for rest, etc.)

Oh, and on the subject of shortstops, Michael Young's hitting .367, and I think Jeter will be hard pressed to outhit him given their respective ballparks.
